Understanding the project:
The project I was given was to create a title sequence based on the hit television series That 70’s Show. The task was to have the video display the show in a way that represents it well and draws the viewer in. The design elements included are supposed to be based on the show’s theme.
Process:
I have previous knowledge of the subject due to watching the television show. But I had to do a deeper dive because I needed to make graphics and illustrations in the video. The part that took the most time was creating the content going into the video. So, first, I researched all design aspects, the colors most common, the type that fit best, the different types of scene locations, etc. All this information was necessary to move forward. I then went into my sketches, helping me understand what I wanted the clips to look like. But I needed to think about these aspects moving and shifting to different scenes across the screen.
So, after sketching, I went into my After Effects; from here, I decided on the color and type as a base to build on for the rest of my more complicated elements. That 70’s Show is, of course, based on 70’s fashion and style. So, I chose a color scheme that fits the style: yellow, red, blue, and purple, the central theme. But of course, the ’70s was a very colorful time, so I reflected that in the video.
The graphics and illustrations took more time to build up due to them being detailed and changing with the music constantly. I needed to make sure the pictures were going with the music, and having constant movement with the music is what keeps people intrigued.
Finally, I built it together, then got critiques; my main obstacle was timing. I had to ensure the timing was on point and there were no issues or glitches.
Solution:
The outcome of the title sequence accurately represents the television show and keeps the viewer engaged with constant movement and visuals that flow with the music. The problem was solved with the results of a 35-second video that went through the design process, helping to get here finally.
Takeaways:
I learned more about the process of motion design. I used my design knowledge but had to incorporate different aspects due to motion. But the biggest takeaway was how crucial it is to focus on timing. I believe this was my biggest challenge; timing on motion graphics takes a long time, and if it were not stressed enough, the video wouldn’t be what it is. I am satisfied with the results; I think I took my design knowledge and skills to create a video that reflects what kind of designer I am. I learned that even with a specific project like this one, that has a sturdy theme and is well-known. Our uniqueness as designers could still always shine through.
